Welcome...
This is the website and blog of Rev. Dr. Stewart Weaver.
I am the minister at St Philip's Church Joppa. We are a dynamic church in the Portobello and Joppa area of Edinburgh.
This website is designed to give you a flavour of my thoughts and musings and to provide some further reading on my sermons and other ideas.
I update the website around once a week, usually with a newsletter, a sermon or a prayer, and sometimes some photos.
You should also find lots of news and comment on events and happenings in and around the church.
On Sunday 22 April St. Philip’s joined with our neighbours at St. James’ and the Old Parish for a trip to Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth. There we had a communion service and a bit of time for a picnic afterwards.
Here are some photos from one of the members of the Old Parish:

THOUGHT
Your editor recently read an obituary for the Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska, who won the Nobel Prize in 1996. Hers is a fascinating story in which she initially supported the communists after WW2 but she was later ‘ill fitted to the grey conformity of people’s Poland’. There was a stubbornness and scepticism mixed with genuine humility. Here’s a quote from the obituary:
Her favourite phrase was ‘I don’t know’. She told the… click here to read more

We had a concert in the church a few weeks ago, organised by the Portobello Rotary Club. The music included two short pieces from Lauren Davies, a Portobello High Student who came in 2nd place in the Rotary Music Competition; Alec Hodgson, a local folk singer; Tricia Ball and The Duddingston Players, who performed Schubert’s Trout Concerto; and the Lothian and Borders Police Choir. In all, over £2,000 was raised to support Richmond’s Hope (which works with children who have faced bereavement); Water Aid; and End Polio Now.

Better late than never!
Maybe.
THOUGHT
Philosophers attempt to find out and express something of the nature of God. Israel does not philosophise. It does not seek to grasp God, for God has already grasped it, already has seized it…The God of the philosophers is a mild, timeless, diffuse light, Plato’s sun of justice, the light of the Enlightenment. But the God of Israel is, to use Pascal’s words, ‘fire!’.

The Cleansing of the Temple and a Wife for Isaac
Context of the Cleansing of the Temple
The cleansing of the temple, as told by John, is preceded by some fascinating passages that set the stage and introduce us to themes that will be a part of John’s retelling of the Gospel story.
We have the wonderful introit to John: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God’.
Then we have the witness of John the Baptist, pointing the way to Christ.
Then we have the call of the first disciples, which includes a curious exchange with Nathanial, whom Jesus saw under the fig tree, a scene that almost suggests a dream world.
That is followed by the wedding at Cana, where Jesus… click here to read more
